Your expert A question about this product?

Museum Calf gets its finish at the tannery, not printed on, and a cognac double monk strap is where that shows best. At the Ilcea tannery, dyes are layered onto the wet hide so the cognac glows between amber and copper and shifts with the light, no two pieces quite the same. The Francis is built on the Louvre last, a soft-square tapered toe. Made by our artisans in a workshop in Almansa, Goodyear welted, one pair at a time. A full leather sole keeps it dressy.

Put it under a navy suit and the warm Museum cognac lifts the whole outfit; the straps give it intent, the leather gives it depth. Your friends won't find this at Nordstrom.

Cognac catches the light. Museum cognac holds it — on the most deliberate shoe in the line.

The Louvre Last

Toe shape: Soft square · Fit: Very roomy · Sizing: True to size

The shoe reads contemporary and distinctive. The soft square toe echoes the City's generous fit, but instead of resolving in a full curve, the toe flattens slightly — a touch of geometry that gives it a character of its own without tipping into formal stiffness or casualness.

The effect is subtle: not the assertive chisel of the 357, but a suggestion of squareness that modernizes the silhouette. Works particularly well with more structured clothing, or for the man who wants to step just slightly off the classic path without leaving it.

Double Monk Strap

Two buckles, no laces.

A double monk strap closes with a pair of straps drawn across the vamp, which makes it the most confident shoe in a formal wardrobe — the one that gets noticed without doing anything loud. Monastic in origin, it kept the closed, protective front of a dress shoe and dropped the lacing entirely.

Under a suit it sharpens the whole outfit; with flannel or dark denim it does the work of three other shoes.

Ours is the Francis, Goodyear welted and built across several lasts, from the soft-square Louvre to the chisel-toed 722.

Leather Sole (Closed Channel)

A closed channel leather sole is finished so that the stitching disappears. A thin layer of the sole is lifted, the stitch that holds the outsole is laid into the groove beneath it, and the leather is closed back over the top.

What is left is an uninterrupted surface from toe to heel — no stitch line, nothing on the bottom of the shoe but leather. It is work done on the part of a shoe almost nobody looks at, which is rather the point of it.

Underfoot it behaves like any leather sole: thin enough to keep the line the last gave the shoe, quiet on a hard floor, and replaceable when it finally goes.
