Your expert A question about this product?

A cognac penny loafer is warm to begin with; in Italian Museum calfskin from Ilcea it also moves. A reddish tan in the famous Museum Calf, marbled at the Ilcea tannery where dyes are layered into the wet hide so the color glows between amber and copper and shifts with the light, no two pieces quite the same. A clean leather strap, no laces, the Smith on the elegant 750 last. Made by our artisans in a workshop in Almansa, Goodyear welted, one pair at a time. A full leather sole keeps it dressy.

Put it under a navy suit or pale linen and let the leather do the work — this is the warmth of cognac with the marbled depth only Museum Calf delivers. The loafer people ask about, and the one they can't quite place.

Cognac catches the light. Museum cognac holds it.

The 750 Last

Toe shape: Contemporary almond · Fit: Roomy · Sizing: True to size

The loafer reads comfortable, rounded, and unmistakably elegant. The almond toe is contemporary but soft — full and continuous, with no taper that hardens the line and no edge asking to be noticed. The roundness is deliberate: it is what gives the shoe its ease.

The fit is generous throughout — real volume across the ball of the foot, a comfortable instep, and enough width for the foot to settle without pressure. This is a loafer made to be worn from morning to night, the kind you put on and stop thinking about.

Elegance here comes from proportion rather than from drama. Nothing is sharpened to make a point, and that restraint is exactly what lets the 750 move between tailoring and chinos without ever looking out of place.

Penny Loafer

A penny loafer is the slip-on that dresses up.

A leather strap crosses the vamp with a small cut-out slot in the middle — the slot that once held a coin and gave the shoe its name — and everything else is kept slim and low. No laces, no hardware, no fuss.

Worn with tailored trousers it is nearly as dressy as a derby; worn with chinos in July it is the most comfortable correct shoe there is.

Ours are Goodyear welted, which is unusual in a loafer and the reason the shape holds instead of collapsing after a season of being pulled on and kicked off.

Leather Sole

A leather sole is the dressiest way to finish a shoe, and the reason a good pair reads as a good pair from across the room. It is thin where a rubber sole is thick, so the shoe keeps the line the last gave it instead of adding bulk under the foot.

Leather breathes, takes the shape of the way you walk within a few wears, and can be replaced when it finally goes — this is a sole built to be renewed, not discarded.

It is quieter on a hard floor than anything else we make, and it is the sole to choose when the occasion is formal and the day is dry.
