Your expert A question about this product?

Same two buckles and no laces, a better hide, a dressier last: this is a black double monk strap in the premium line. The upper is top-grade European calfskin chosen for a close, even grain that holds a deep shine and ages without breaking down. Here the Francis is built on the Louvre last, a soft-square toe that tapers in a way no other last does — elegant, deliberate, exactly what a double monk wants. Made by our artisans in a workshop in Almansa, Goodyear welted, one pair at a time. A full leather sole keeps it at its dressiest.

Put it under a suit and it reads considered rather than conventional; the straps and the Louvre line do the talking. The double monk a man wears when he's done explaining himself.

The Oxford is expected. The Francis is chosen.

The Louvre Last

Toe shape: Soft square · Fit: Very roomy · Sizing: True to size

The shoe reads contemporary and distinctive. The soft square toe echoes the City's generous fit, but instead of resolving in a full curve, the toe flattens slightly — a touch of geometry that gives it a character of its own without tipping into formal stiffness or casualness.

The effect is subtle: not the assertive chisel of the 357, but a suggestion of squareness that modernizes the silhouette. Works particularly well with more structured clothing, or for the man who wants to step just slightly off the classic path without leaving it.

Double Monk Strap

Two buckles, no laces.

A double monk strap closes with a pair of straps drawn across the vamp, which makes it the most confident shoe in a formal wardrobe — the one that gets noticed without doing anything loud. Monastic in origin, it kept the closed, protective front of a dress shoe and dropped the lacing entirely.

Under a suit it sharpens the whole outfit; with flannel or dark denim it does the work of three other shoes.

Ours is the Francis, Goodyear welted and built across several lasts, from the soft-square Louvre to the chisel-toed 722.

Leather Sole (Closed Channel)

A closed channel leather sole is finished so that the stitching disappears. A thin layer of the sole is lifted, the stitch that holds the outsole is laid into the groove beneath it, and the leather is closed back over the top.

What is left is an uninterrupted surface from toe to heel — no stitch line, nothing on the bottom of the shoe but leather. It is work done on the part of a shoe almost nobody looks at, which is rather the point of it.

Underfoot it behaves like any leather sole: thin enough to keep the line the last gave the shoe, quiet on a hard floor, and replaceable when it finally goes.
