A brown Derby gets worn more than the black one that gets bought first. Open lacing, a smooth upper, an almond toe, in a versatile mid-brown that pairs with gray, navy, denim, and tan. The upper is top-grade European calfskin, the brown burnished by hand at the toe and heel so the color shifts between chestnut and tobacco in the light. Here it's built on the Marco's 675 last — slightly deeper fit — for comfort through the day. Made by our artisans in a workshop in Almansa, Goodyear welted, one pair at a time. A full leather sole keeps it dressed.

Put it under a gray suit and it's the obvious choice; put it under chinos and a jacket and it's correct without being serious. Brown covers more occasions than black — the formal brown is the most useful shoe most men aren't wearing.
